Sadly my Contract was not renewed for the rest of this semester, so I doubt I will see any of you again.

The Light at the End

Well folks; the end is nigh, and it seems from the handful of blogs I visited this afternoon that things are pretty much as I suspected. Given that, the contact hours were cut, and the difficulty many of you faced getting your head around the software I understand many of you will feel that your final product may not be as 'polished' as you'd like. I will take all this into consideration, when I assess your work.

The conference I attended was exciting and refreshing, if you ever get the oppurtunity to attend an ITSC conference go, it was worth the money.

A small note of personal promotion, if I may, a website gallery I built, publish, edit, run and maintain, called altfotonet.org, has been recognised by the National Library of Australia as worhty of archiving in their archives, it is a site/publication about photography, have a look see what you think.

Looking forward to seeing some of your projects this week, keep up the hard work everyone, you have indeed worked well, and I am expecting some fantastic results before the end of the semester.

Here is the file for the revision exercise for those who were in class on the last day of semester.

The task is to create a 2 page site, in a nodal manner, that, has information about Recipes and cooking, page 2 in particular is to also have a page title that reflects it's content, as well as a series of 6 [minimum] external websites on cooking. Replace all my text with your own on both pages. Add colour and some visual and textual hierarchy, to both pages to make it easy to read and visually pleasing.

Week 7

Ok my apologies, I've been laying low, mainly because of other commitments.

Here's the plan for this week. I will give a 'revision' exercise to 1/2 the class, the remainder, will, get an abridged version of the last class before the break.

And as we are at the 1/2 way mark, I plan on giving folks ample time to continue projects in class over the coming weeks.

The main issue I want to address soon, is mages and the web. Watch this space.

You should at this point be photographing/scanning/digitising, your 'folios' ready for your websites and be well on your way to finishing your 'publications'. See you tomorrow.

Thanks for all the e-mails regarding your blogs, I will add them to the CMAARTS blog over the coming days. A reciprocal link is always appreciated.

What is this class about?

Just to reiterate, this class is bout 2 things, making a 'publication', and a website. What the publication actually is, is up to you and your interests and research. Whether you print it or distribute it some other way is up to you as well. Some ideas, might be a School news letter, a flyer advertising your band or exhibition, a catalogue for an upcoming exhibition you are participating in or organising, a paper or presentation for some other class with in study your current program.

Room 7215 Usage

Here are the points about using the room that are pertinent, sent to me by David Redknap, I will help people set this up in the next class.

Every user will have to customise the dock to display the applications they require: e.g. if students or staff require Photoshop, they will need to drag the Photoshop icon to their dock to get ready access to it.
All students have an download limit, linked to their student id number (to forestall the abuse we saw in Nov last year): it¹s important to let all staff and students know this, as it will be a deterrent.
At the end of the class, it¹s vital all students and staff LOGOUT of their profile, by quitting all applications (not just the open windows!!), going to the Apple Menu and choosing LOG OUT if users don¹t log out, they run the risk of someone using up their download allocation: this will have an impact on how the end of class is conducted but it has to be done to stop misuse.
Students must still save to their external drives, as the macs may need to be re-imaged at any time. [this means that the hard drives can be erased and reformatted, at any time].
After 5pm, can all users shutdown the mac when they leave: this will not only protect their download allocation but will prevent a huge number of software faults by allowing the shutdown time to proceed normally.

Welcome everyone to another year. This blog is the central communication point for The Digital Publication ACF 3001. Here we will hopefully have an ongoing dialog about publishing, in general, and your own publishing projects this year.

The Strikes.

I whole heartedly support any and ALL union action, however, the union has simply asked sessional staff re-schedule classes, this is not possible, we have a mere 12 weeks to get things done, and as I work elsewhere the rest of the week, it's Friday or nothing. I will be talking to Sue to clarify this issue and be getting back to you as soon as I can, probably here on the blog.

This week I will outline the subject, The Digital Publication ACF 3001, and my expectations of you in this subject, show some examples of prior work and talk about computers in general, as well as ideas on issues such as the Internet and Publishing.

The requirements of the 1st assignment are:- all modeler files and lightwave files, 2 jpegs of the finished results, i.e. the 2 lighting setups, delivered any way you see fit. Your blogs will have all the research and back up material i need to asses the quality of your work.

Well folks it was good to see so many projects getting off the ground. Next week is week 11, and you will be able to work on your projects. The projects are al due the week after which is week 12. The ftp accounts are ready to go, and we can set those up next week in class, you can either use Dreamweaver or free ftp tool like fetch for the mac, or filezilla for both platforms. I have already setup a page and will continue to work on it over the coming weeks. If like Anna you have already set up a site please send me the uri so I can link to it, and please don't forget to link to all your fellow students sites.

I had a request at the end of the class for some software alternatives to Dreamweaver and Photoshop. A good place ot start looking for these kinds of things is versiontracker.com they have tons of freeware, shareware, demoware, and nagware to use and try out. For the time being here is a list of software that is either free or so cheap you must consider buying it.

NVU, the FREE dreamweaver equivalent.
iris.app a young and raw tool for image editing
Seashore a VERY basic image editor, but FREE
LiveQuartz, another image editor, that is donationware
Lightzone is another alternative, not cheap, but certainly a powerful tool that isn't photoshop.

so these are but a few of the tools out there, all with varying degrees of sophistication ranging from free to cheap, ie under $50.00 US, let us know how yo go.

Week 8, a round up...

...so, we covered briefly; setting up site management, how to use the tools in Dreamweaver to layout our pages, and the pros and cons of the various ways to achieve this.

Here are the notes to help you set up site management using Dreamweaver, one of it's great strengths btw.

I have NOW got the visi-bone reference material organised and will bring it to class next week.

After the discussion re: CSS and tables, here's a site that uses pure un-adulterated CSS to achieve it's ends, click on the links on the right to change the CSS style sheet attached to the page and get a feel what CSS can achieve. Jeffrey Zeldman and Eric Meyer are two big hitters in this field, their sites are beautiful also and again totally compliant CSS and XHTML, John Allsop, an Australian developer of style-master, the CSS style-sheet writing software is a name also to be reckoned with, check his blog and company site for a look at the stylish way CSS has been implemented.

So next week we will, look in more depth at how to utilise CSS in our website designs from within the Dreamweaver interface.

I also want to touch base with you all on your publishing projects, finally, if I haven't commented on your blog at all this semester it means either I haven't got the address or, you haven't written anything. See me in class next week if you fit into either of these categories.

we will begin to look at the history and ideas behind the internet and why it was developed, we will also take a peek at the interface of dreamweaver, one of many packages available to us to write web pages and websites.

I've written a few ideas down for you to read, these are notes I will continue to write and expand upon as the web grows and changes, I guess I'm saying it's a work in progress as is the entire web anyways. Don't forget to read the site I mentioned a week or so back.

Two books that have been a major influence in my thoughts and ideas about Web Design, are, both by a designer, author and web designer Jeffrey Zeldman. "Taking Your Talent To The Web, pub New Riders, 2002, and Designing With Web Standards, pub New Riders, 2003, have many important things to say about the nature of the web as a communications medium, available to all who wish to engage with it. Both these books are in the VU library by the way.

We invite visual artists to explore the natural world in varicolored ways.

Residencies are awarded without prejudice, at no cost, to national and international artists in the disciplines of visual arts. Those selected are offered a preparatory allowance, monthly stipend, living and studio space for up to six months with an organized exhibition hosted by AMB AMRO Bank Berhad, Malihom Sdn Bhd and Wawasan Open University at the end of the Program to showcase the Artists’ works.

Week 3 ~ Publishing

Ok folks, I've received a few blog links and 1 visual diary link, thank you. Keep them coming or remind me in class of your intentions so I can keep my assessment records organised.

This week we will revise last weeks class, as well as look at text boxes in more detail. Colour and lines, stroking, fills and other effects will be looked at. We will also import some graphics into our documents. Tables, and formatting tables, Book creation and exporting to PDF, will also be covered.

I will as usual have a handful of documents to distribute electronically in class as well.

I'm hoping that folks will share some thoughts about their final project soon, either in class, or on their blogs.

I also want to mention this software today, this can also form a part of your major publishing project.

The Louis Joel Gallery is located at 5 Sargood St, Altona. The launch is on the 28th of March 2008 from 6 – 8pm. Michelle Mantsio will officially opening the exhibition.

Gallery opening hours are Monday – Thursday 10am – 4pm and Saturday – Sunday 11am – 3pm, and runs from the 28th of March – 11th of April.

My VU e-mail addy?

Ok folks, as I sit here at home and write this, I, am stil unsure about the state of my VU e-mail address. I will check when I get in later and if there are any issues with it. if there are, I will give you another address to use.

Hopefully you are all up and running with your blogs and all the other web 2.0 publishing services we talked about, last week. Once we have sorted my e-mail issues, we will be able to add and link to them here on the right. Two other services I want to mention this week as well are ipernity.com, and redbubble.com. Remind me in class to talk about them.

Indesign™, or Dreamweaver™

This week, I am at this stage, still unsure about the state of the software we have access to. The implications on this are not drastic but annoying.

So, depending on the software available to us, we will either start looking at Indesign™, or Dreamweaver™, either way, we will start by making a CV/Resumé of some sort.

If we have access to Indesign, we will look at it's interface, and start by working mainly with typography,[this is a great website and packed with simple and easily digestible info, have a poke around we might even try an exercise or two from it] and typography alone. From an artistic perspective, here's an interesting website based on, typography as an art form, to get you thinking.

Well I enjoyed myself, I found the clay models in particular very interesting. Also of note no mention of software used, directly, but references to software as part of the process.

I'd like folks to write some extra this week about what they discovered and learned at the exhibition, and I'd like to hear your thoughs on some of the ideas expressed by John Lasseter. For example in several places through out the show reference was made to story and character, when it comes to your own art, what is your story and how will you tell it and why will you tell it?

We will learn the bevel tool, as well as, the knife tool, the band-saw tool, the snap tool,along with stretch, bend and drag tools, this week, as well as, how to work in subpatch mode, this is the exercise that will get us up and running

Well here we are 1/2 way through the year already. This semester we are looking at Lightwave a 3d animation and modeling software package.

Here are 2 sets of notes to get you started on the introduction to Lightwave.

Remember the written component is compulsory and must take the form of a blog, I expect 75 to 150 words a week over 12 weeks. Those of you who worked with me last semester can continue using the same address, can our new class members please e-mail me their blog address by week 2.

Another Way to present a visual diary is using this free online service, or perhaps use a site like Multiply.com to add all manner of media not just writing but sounds and images and links as well. Please let me know which way you want to go.

This semester we are looking at Lightwave a 3d modeling and animation package. They have a set of comprehensive tutorials, on their site. My advice, start reading them ASAP, in particular, the ones that describe the interface, these are downloadable movie file in the swf/flash format I think, I will have in class ready for you to take home and work with. So here we are at the 1/2 way mark. Already. So as you know, your 1st project is due today, 2 interactive house plans with 2 separate story lines. We will work on these in class today. I'd also like to see the plans for where you think you want to take your final project today as well, so there will be lot's of 1 to 1 teaching today.

On a more research based note there are 2 fabulous exhibitions on in Melbourne at the moment.

A survey of Contemporary Photography at Heide

Anne Zahahlka, is a pre-eminent post modernist and her work is something to behold. The show at Heide, which I have yet to see is a curated show that is trying to get a glimpse of the future of photography. If folks are interested I'd be happy to run an excursion to these shows at some point this semester.

Text More Complex Interactivity, & Sound

So this week we are adding more complex interactivity, and text and sound, if you happen to read this before class this week, please bring some headphones. [Cheap, earbuds will suffice.] This site allows free sound effects to be downloaded. Just register first and download the free files, for adding special effects and simple sounds to our major and minor projects.

On another note, last week I talked about the number of stories, that could be told, well a little poking around on the internet produced some interesting results. Check this link that lists 5 major groupings of possible stories.

Collaborative Art Project

Discarded Object Poster Project

Have you ever seen a single shoe in the gutter, a beanie on the road,or a glove on the tram, and thought about whom the object may have belonged to, and how it got lost?

Embedded within the creases and stains of these objects is a human history that speaks of usage and ownership.

Discarded Object Poster Project involves photographing lost objects and making the images into posters that will be posted around the CBD. The shift in context of the object, especially in contrast to the expected advertising image, will reflect it as a trace of a person the remnant of an action or routine.

A map outlining the posters locations will be produced and launched at Bus Passenger Studio Space in early November. The map will help access the work and create a permanent record of the posters.

Discarded Object Poster Project invites you to submit an image of a discarded object, which will then be made into a poster. Next time you see a shoe/glove/sock (anything!) simply photograph it and send it to discardedobject@hotmail.com (as a jpeg image, 300dpi or higher ifpossible) including the location of where it was found.

Foundation Acquisitive Prize for her mixed media installation “Soul...”. Exhibition selection & the F.J. Foundation Acquisitive Prize will be judged by:
Max DelanyDirector, Monash University Museum of Art The finalists will be exhibited at the Gallery from 2 September to 5 November 06. One winning work will be acquired by the Gallery and the winning artist will receive a cash prize of $15,000 from the F.J. Foundation.

As an aside, if you type two papragraphs a week each with, say 3 sentences with ten words, over a 12 week, semester, that's 720 words [approximately] and enough to pass the written component of this subject.

Sound; Week 4

Some sound audio links for this weeks class

Audacity, this my favourite it's open source and free, it may not be at the top end of the scale but is more than adequate for our projects this semester, you can also add plug-ins and extend it quite well. Don't forget the Lame Plug-in to convert back to MP3, the help file for Audacity to "edit" sounds.
Audioblast, can't say much about this one as it's a PC app. I'd be more than happy to hear from someone - anyone about it. I'll even accept a report on it as part of the written component for this semester.
Soliton II, again can't say much here, see above note.This from the website where I found it, "Soliton is a free sound editor capable of recording and processing sound. You can apply various filters and effects, like normalize, fade, delay, echo, repeated echo reverb, high- and lowpass filters, wall transmission simluation, signal generation and so on; you can also change the amplitude resolution and the samplerate of wave files and view the data in the time- and frequency domains."
Encounter2000, again from the website where I found it:-Encounter2000 is the first and only fully multithreaded sound editor in the windows world today. Load files and work on files while other filters are still running in the background. Encounter2000 also features the EncounterExtension plug-in architecture, which works similarly to plug-in architectures that are know in the graphic world for years. Third party providers or just every single programmer can add its/his own filters to Encounter.

I'm sure that there are many others out there, be sure to check versiontracker.com or your favourite download site, for any and all your software needs.

You can import all the common sound formats into Director, such as AIFF, WAV,AU Shockwave Audio, and MP3. It is recommneded using sounds with an 8- or 16- bit depth with a sampling rate of 11.025 kHz, 22.050 kHz, or 44.1q kHz

West Space Special Project

Music performance – international artist exchange

Telephone, 20 Questions and Other Guessing Games brings together composers and sound artists from Melbourne and Canada in a week of exploratory collaboration, using an internet exchange of sound files, word play and musical phrases to create new music and sound ideas.

Observe the process as it unfolds at West Space gallery, open to the public 15th-18th March, then join us on 21st March for an evening at the Melbourne Planetarium, under Scienceworks’ ‘night sky’ dome, to hear the culmination of the sound ideas developed.

The ‘campfire game’ serves as a metaphor for the exchange and transformation of ideas and sounds – the artists’ musical ideas have been processed, remixed and regenerated, like a single word passed around a campfire circle. Using the internet, digital sound engineering and non-linear production technologies, Telephone is a contemporary take on the musical game of our ancestors.
